Biographical Note

Markus Gehring is Professor of International Environmental Law at the University of Cambridge, Fellow and Director of Studies in Law at Hughes and a Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. Markus Ghering is a distinguished scholar with extensive expertise in global environmental governance, climate change law, and sustainable development. He is a founding member of the Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (C-EENRG), where he leads interdisciplinary research at the intersection of law, policy, and science. Prof. M. has advised numerous international organizations, including UNEP and the European Commission, and has served as an expert on legal frameworks for sustainability transitions.. His work focuses bridges legal theory and policy practice, offering valuable insights for participants working at the intersection of law, science, and regional sustainability governance and he is author of several publications on EU, International and Sustainable Development Law. His research explores how law can support complex governance systems, with a growing focus on regional cooperation mechanisms such as the Barcelona Convention system, making his contribution especially relevant to the Mediterranean context of this Training School.
